Foot orthotics are commonly used by a number of different types of health professionals to treat a wide range of different types and kinds of foot problems. There are also so many different types of foot orthotics and there are so many different types of foot problems. At its most basic classification there are the custom made foot orthotics and the pre-made mass produced foot orthotics or supports. The custom made foot orthotics are made off a model of the individual foot to match the shape of the foot. The pre-made types are available in a variety of different shapes and designs and are chosen for individuals based on those shapes, but it is more difficult to make then as comfortable as the ones that are made to match the foot exactly.
Beyond those two basic differences, there are made different designs features such as how much cushioning the support has, how high that support is, how rigid or flexible that support is and there are many different types of adds on that are used with foot orthotics. The choice is very broad and often needs expert clinicians to make decisions.
When it comes to getting custom-made foot orthotics for their patients, Podiatrists often select a range of design features so the the foot orthotics match and shape of the foot and also to make changes to the alignment and function of the foot so that they can get a clinical outcome and relieve any symptoms. A Cluffy Wedge is one such feature that could be used. This wedge is an add on to the end of the foot orthotic that goes under the big toe to lift it up. This can help support the arch of the foot through a mechanism in the foot known as the windlass. Like so many other types of foot orthotic designs, this will typically work really well when it is indicated. The problem is that if it is not indicated or used incorrectly, then it won’t work. This all comes down to the experience and expertise of the clinician that is prescribing the foot orthotic.
